For several years now, an almost flowering plant has grown outside the kitchen window. It was planted by previous owners and the thing has always died off before it could bloom.

Not this year, oh no!

The thing is gorgeous. The foilage died months ago, but it has sent up a 2-foot tall stalk on top of which are a half-dozen blooms which you see here.

So I hung a pillowcase on the fence that the thing grows against and took this snapshot.

Surprise!!! whitteiii[at]-remove-mindspring.com - Indianapolis, IN 15Nov2003 1:33 PM (6 years 117 days ago) Looks somewhat like the proverbial "surprise lilly". The foilage is about 1 1/2 foot long and dies off (in Indiana) in July. The flower stalk then springs forth a month or so later. From bare ground to full flower in just 3 days. We have around 200 of the plants scattered about the yard. On a good year, roughly 1/4 of them produce flowers. The blooms, when brought into the house, can clear your sinuses. Enjoy.
