As photographers go, I suppose I was a late bloomer. I picked up my first camera when I was 22 and didn't know a thing about taking pictures.

Kim, after seeing my first attempts simply said "You'll get better". Normally, I am one to give up after early frustrations, but I persisted, and I am thankful that I did.

I joined the Purdue University yearbook as a staff photographer. There, I built my chops by plowing through thousands of rolls of film under the guise of doing actual work for the yearbook.

Eventually, I became the chief photographer. Finals week found me stuck for nights straight churning out CibaChrome color prints..

I made a steady progression from found geometries to still lifes to tentative candids to honest portraits. Photography became my emergence into the world of others.

Between 1989 and 1992, I stumbled into being something of a "photo-dude" for a strange mix of recording artists.

I specialize in existing-light photography and until the advent of decent digital scanners, I also printed all my own material.

I have experimented with a variety of films, formats and processing. A couple pictures use oddball techniques like direct to positive paper or paper negatives.

The galleries shown at right are of historical and ongoing forays into the play of shadow and light..

Enough talk!

David, would you consider joining (and posting some photos to) the Musical Family Tree site at http://www.musicalfamilytree.net ? That site is devoted to Indiana musical history, with a particular emphasis on the era from the late 1970s to the early 1990s. At the moment, West Lafayette/Purdue is woefully underrepresented on there.

Dear David,

I am writing to express my interest in using one or more of your
photographs on a future book cover for Guilford Press.

Guilford is a small, independant publisher of scholarly books in
behavioral sciences located in the SoHo section of New York
City. Our website, www.guilford.com, can give you a pretty good
idea of what we publish. As the Art Director I have the pleasure
of designing all of our book covers. I was Googling for an image
of two chairs for a book titled Ambivalence in Psychotherapy
when I happened upon a gorgeous shot you took titled "Old
Psych Building Chairs." That image led me to your website where
I viewed all 250+ thumbnails you've posted. Since I liked several
more I wanted to write and ask about their availibility.

Being a small publisher, any remuneration for using your images
would mean more to your artistic pride than to your bank
account. Nonetheless, let me know if my note inspires a reply
from you. At the very least, please accept my enthusiasm for
your aesthetic and your craft.

With good wishes,

Paul Gordon

A blast from your past...fellow NPHS grad. D.Amburgey ('84). Stumbled across your website and found it to be quite interesting and amazing to say the least! Your photography is fantastic! Not a surprise that you would continue to be creative within the world of art and music. Was trying to figure out why Kim looked so familiar...then the brick fell on my head and I remembered! My parents still have a pencil (color) drawing she did for me (about 23 years ago!) from an old photograph of my Dad and I. It's still one of my Mom's true treasures. Congratulations on your many successes! All the best!
Can I expose your fotos in my home?

I really love your photos, they all look like classics to me, and I love the people you photograph. Their faces are so interesting. I just mentioned your site in my blog.
